Iao Valley
The Iao Valley is just a few minutes west of Kahului[a]. Take highway 32 west and stay in the rightmost lane until you see a sign directing you to the valley which will be straight ahead while the rest of the highway turns left.
The valley has absolutely stunning scenery with steep sides and two streams coming down the two forks of the valley, merging just at the park entrance. The valley was the site of a most bitter battle[b] during Kamehameha I[c]'s campaign to unite the Hawaiian islands under his rule.

The "Iao Needle". A piece of denser rock that was embedded in more easily erodable rock, and that remained when the surrounding rock was washed away by rains.

A hiking trail follows one of the streams up a couple of hundred meters.
