September
An Evening at Wättingeströmmen[a]
It's the long tail of summer - still warm, but every day is colder than the one before, and each sunset earlier than the previous.
Little Tikes Tap-a-Tune Piano[b]
While at the playground I found this xylophone from 1985. Since I had my bike multi-tool with me, I decided to repair it.
Anarchy Cat[c]
Or maybe AnarCat.
Road 5004: Gabrovo Bypass[d]
Something for Atlas Obscura.
An Early Morning Walk Through Gabrovo[e]
I woke up early and grabbed the camera.
Sunsets at the Igoto Bridge[f]
September came with glowing red sunsets.
Visti is Gone[g]
Runor is everything I wanted Visti to be.
August
Sunset From the Bergius Botanic Garden[h]
As seen from a small jetty.
Baby Safe Phone Box[i]
Problem: baby likes to talk to grandma over video call, but the little one also presses every single button there is on the touchscreen.
4K For Less With Panasonic Lumix LX-15[j]
Wanting to get into 4K video in 2025 but not willing to upgrade my Nikon D600 to a Nikon Z, I thought I'd kit out my old LX-15. And kit it out I did.
English as an Interchange Format[k]
While trying to organize the sound files that I produce in my newest hobby, field recording, I came across the problem of combining the outputs from several multimodal models. It turns out that plain English is a viable universal model-to-model interchange format.
Organizing Sound Files[l]
Organizing sound files comes with a number of challenges that aren't present when organizing photos or videos. Using the album cover art to set a meaningful thumbnail solves it.
Deep Learning and the Entry Barrier to Software Development[m]
Learning software development used to be cheap, but with deep learning, not so much.
Left Outer Join Lateral[n]
Or - how I stopped worrying and learned to aggregate SQL queries. This is a pattern that can be used when you have multiple SQL SELECT queries, each returning zero or one rows, except for the first which must return a single row, where each query can depend on the result of previous queries, and you want to reduce the number of database roundtrips.
Field Recording[o]
Having fun with microphones, outdoors.
Bumblebees at the Bergius Botanic Garden[p]
The little bumblebees were out en masse this evening. There was a light drizzle, so I got to try out my new old Zoom H2 recorder.
Total Metal[q]
Ika Johannesson, one of the authors of Blod, Eld, Död, has created Total Metal, an exhibition at Kulturhuset.
Carrot and Walnut Bread[r]
This is a modification of the overnight bread rolls. Add one shredded carrot and a lot of walnut kernels.
July
Hyperlogloglog by Carlos Bueno[s]
Sometimes, someone really hits it out of the park.
View From a Jetty[t]
I came for the swan, but found the great crested grebe.
Getting My Ducks in a Row[u]
Birding at Laduviken.
HDR Video[v]
Adventures in HDR video capture and 4K upscaling.
Next Station: Igelbäcken Nature Reserve[w]
Erik Eckersten did a refreshingly bold transformation of the now unfinished and abandoned subway stop. Will it ever happen? We can but hope.
Dark Mode OpenStreetMap[x]
OpenStreetMap doesn't have a dark mode, but we can get something similar by using CSS filters.
Goodbye, Google Maps; Hello, OpenStreetMap![y]
Replacing the maps on this site with OpenStreetMap.

Ur Varselklotet (Tales From the Loop) by Simon Stålenhag[z]
Stålenhag improved his vignette-by-vignette storytelling in the sequel Things From the Flood, which I think is the better book due to it being a more cohesive work. Still, Tales From the Loop will still stand alongside Aniara as a landmark in Swedish science fiction, and probably be the landmark of the 2010s.
Labyrinten (The Labyrinth) by Simon Stålenhag[aa]
It doesn't really dig into the central moral dilemma underlying the survivors's guilt, and the storytelling is like The Electric State where it alludes and hints but doesn't really deliver. Except on the last page, where Stålenhag manages to scuttle pretty much his whole worldbuilding. That's a delivery of sorts I guess.
The Moon Over the Lidingö Bridges[ab]
Looking back towards Stockholm.
Islingeviken at Night[ac]
A view from the other side of the bridge.
Carrier 07[ad]
Marine Group's Carrier 07, at anchor between the remaining two Lidingö bridges, the third of which it helped demolish in 2022.
100% Accessibility[ae]
Every now and then I do an accessibility check. It's constantly evolving, and so far it has always resulted in an improved site - better HTML structure, improved usability, etc. - for everyone, not just those needing assistive technologies.
Passagen (The Electric State) by Simon Stålenhag[af]
A well executed attempt at longer storytelling that fails to deliver a satisfying conclusion and falls a bit flat since it lacks that special uncanny realism that Stålenhag does so well in his stories set in Sweden.
Dirt Digging Machines[ag]
Cleaning the ground in preparation for residential buildings.
May
Svenska Maskiner, Ensligt Belägna (Sunset at Zero Point) by Simon Stålenhag[ah]
A story where the science-fiction elements and illustrations for once take a back seat. A step outside Stålenhag's usual comfort zone - a bit clumsy here and there but comes out as overall excellent, just like the teens the book is about.
Gelato at Casa Amico[ai]
A photo session made quick, because the models were literally melting away.
Red Leaves[aj]
What is says on the box - red leaves.
Snaky Bench[ak]
A bench.
A Universe Filled With Stone[al]
I have this memory of a synopsis of a short story: it's an alien living in a universe completely filled with stone, and it's called something like "my stone telescope". Every now and then that memory pops up, but I've never been able to find the story. Now that we live in the age of AI I figured I'd ask.
April
Bike Repair Stand For Less[am]
When washing your bike or taking a wrench to it, it's nice to be able to rotate the pedals, have things at eye-level, and so on.
Moon Over Husarviken[an]
Still not a cliche.
Droplets[ao]
I think it's the little hairs on the leaves that hold the droplets.
Little Lost Bee[ap]
Spring is here, and some get to work right away. (I helped it out.)
March
Another Husarvik Sunset[aq]
This will turn into a cliche, but it's not there yet.
Can't Turn Off Core Isolation or Memory Integrity[ar]
Turn on Hyper-V.
Installing Photoshop CS6 on Windows 10[as]
Notes from a couple of painful hours.
Pre- and Post-Processing When Archiving Video[at]
When recompressing videos it's a good idea to get the video as right as possible. Since we're going to apply lossy compression to it we want to make sure that we end with as good a copy as possible
The Deer of Årsta[au]
A sign of spring, a herd of deer graze on the small green shoots found under the thick layer of last year's autumn leaves.
Cemetery of Laterino[av]
A large cemetery in Siena, dating from 1784.
Where the Walls Have Ears[aw]
A building with a very stylish intercom.
February
Three Years Fighting[ax]
I think it's time we started properly curb stomping Russia. You don't win by incremental means, you win by really going for the kill.
A Walk Around Husarviken[az]
A winter walkabout.
January
Video Recompression for Archiving[ba]
The results were surprisingly good. 4K video would recompress to as little as 10% of the original file with no loss that I could see, while FullHD would recompress to about one-fifth.
Ice[bb]
I find ice formations fascinating. A bit like the old-school plasma effect.
Sunset Over Husarviken[bc]
Nice winter sunset.
And There Comes the Snow[bd]
It's been hovering around freezing for a bit, but finally we got a proper delivery of the white stuff.
Gnomesville[be]
South of Perth, there is a place where every gnome can find a home.
A Cold Afternoon at Laduviken[bf]
It's winter: with the cold, but without the snow.
