When washing your bike or taking a wrench to it, it's nice to be able to rotate the pedals, have things at eye-level, and so on.
My apartment has a very nice bike garage, and that garage has a very nice area for washing the bike, but no really good way to elevate the bike. Looking at the I-beam going along the ceiling I took a clue from the Kradl bicycle lift[a] and bought a little vise, a hook, and used an old strap with some steel wire to connect them (along with some electrical tape to cover exposed metal parts).
Steel wire[b] ($7)
Electric tape[c] ($4)
The result isn't a $1250 repair stand[g] or even a $100 repair stand[h] - but I'd say it's a pretty good $21.50 way to get my bike off the floor. Plus, it folds up small.
