Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach is west-northwest of Irvine, and is pretty much the surfing capital of the world. (If not the capital in terms of popularity, size of waves, and so on, it certainly is the spiritual capital.) The intersection of Main Street and the Pacific Coast Highway (which is right next to the beach at this point) is the site of Surf City, USA, and as you stand on the pier plaza you'll have the pier extending into the Pacific, a bunch of surfers bobbing up and down in the water around it, and Jack's Surfboards on the left side of the intersection.
