Eldfesten / Chaharshanbe Suri 2013
With snow, wind and the coldest month of March in many years, what better way to celebrate the start of spring than with lots of fire?
Chaharshanbe Suri[a] (or Eldfesten as it is called in Sweden) is the day before the Persian New Year, Nowruz[b], is celebrated on the spring equinox. The celebration is a tradition that stretches back more than 3000 years - compared with Swedish new year, which comes from the 14th century and is approximately 700 years old. (As a curiosity we can note that the British Empire had New Years on March 25th until 1751.)
The 19th was no exception from the March weather. The day before had been thick with storm warnings for southern Sweden and the blizzard was about to reach Stockholm. At mid day, the first load of snow fell. But then it seems like even the weather gods realized it was time to pack up and leave, because as the party got started, the cloud cover started to break up and the wind stopped...
...and surrounded by twenty thousand festival-goers (and a number of gas burners), you don't have to worry about cold!
The Festival of Fire offered a mix of the traditional and the modern. The artists had a preference for speaking Persian with the crowd - but I promise you, with the mood there, there was no problem understanding; or, for someone like me, who doesn't speak a word Persian, to not understand.
Parvaz Dance Ensemble[c] was there and performed.

Burnt Out Punks[f] showed us a fire circus set to Persian music.
