The Sokolski Monastery sits on the mountain slopes above Gabrovo. Originally a small church when it was founded in 1833, it was expanded into a monastery by 1834. During the April Uprising[a] the Gabrovo section of the insurgents assembled here before fighting in Kravenik and Novo Selo (close to Veliko Tarnovo). The section was destroyed by the Turks. During the subsequent Russo-Turkish War[b] in which Bulgaria did win its freedom, the monastery was a field hospital for a brief period.
