Sokolski Monastery
The Sokolski Monastery sits on the mountain slopes above Gabrovo. Originally a small church when it was founded in 1833, it was expanded into a monastery by 1834. During the April Uprising the Gabrovo section of the insurgents assembled here before fighting in Kravenik and Novo Selo (close to Veliko Tarnovo). The section was destroyed by the Turks. During the subsequent Russo-Turkish War in which Bulgaria did win its freedom, the monastery was a field hospital for a brief period.
