The martenitsa[a] (Bulgarian: мартеница) is an adornment made of red and white yarn. It is worn, celebrating the return of spring, from March 1 until the wearer sees a stork (in which case the martenitsa is removed and put under a rock) or a blossoming tree (in which case the martenitsa is hung on the tree).
