Fourth of July

At the age of nine I have to support myself. Freeze and starve I did. Sometimes eat bark bread, but that is over now.
Should I come to Sweden now, I would take my cap or hat in hand and bow and stand on ceremony, but here in America a worker and an official are equally regarded, even our honored president Roosevelt himself would not look on me with contempt, if I take my hat off or not, when I speak with him.
