People use stories to make sense of a world that is too complex for any one to understand. Believing that any set of rules will let you succeed at will is not different from putting your trust in an amulet or other sorcery. The best we can do is to use what limited human faculties we have: make as much sense of the world as we can and exercise good judgment.
