Research shows that gladiators, far from being the lean, mean, muscled killing machines in the movie with that name, were in fact a bit flabby. They were so on purpose, as most fights weren't to the death, and therefore it was useful to have a higher capacity for "flesh wounds".
So we have two tubbies made to fight each other while the rest look on and cheer. Not that different from your average junior high school, then.
